Grooming guide

An owner's guide to naturally wavy hair

Waves are the most rewarding texture to own and the easiest to ruin with the wrong routine. Here's how our master barbers and stylists at Fwresh in Dorchester keep waves defined, hydrated, and sharply cut.

Know your wave pattern

Waves fall on a spectrum — loose S-bends that sit close to the head, springy 360 waves built through brushing and training, and coarser textures that shift between wave and curl. Your pattern decides how much weight your cut can carry and how much moisture your routine needs. Bring photos of your hair on a good day and a bad day; your barber reads both.

Wash less, condition more

Two to three washes a week is plenty for most wavy textures. Use a sulfate-free cleanser, then condition from mid-length to the ends and rinse with cool water to lay the cuticle down. On off days, rinse and re-condition without shampoo to reset the wave without stripping it.

Style while soaking wet

Product goes on dripping-wet hair, not damp hair. A leave-in for hydration, a light cream or mousse for hold, then scrunch upward and let it air dry or diffuse on low heat. Touching waves mid-dry breaks the cast and creates frizz — leave them alone until they're fully dry, then scrunch out the crunch.

Train your waves

For 360 waves, brushing is the whole program: a medium brush after moisturizer, consistent direction from the crown outward, and a durag every night. Give it 30 straight days before judging results. Consistency beats products every time.

Get the right cut

Wavy hair needs shape, not thinning shears. Length is removed with point cutting and internal layers so the wave springs instead of puffing. Too much bulk at the sides creates the triangle; too little length up top kills the pattern. Fades and tapers keep waves clean without flattening the crown.

Protect it overnight

A satin pillowcase, durag, or loose pineapple ties preserve pattern and cut down morning frizz. Cotton pulls moisture straight out of the hair — it's the single most common reason a great wash day doesn't survive to day two.
